Ok so now i’m going to have my little venting session I deleted from yesterday’s post. Feel free to skip because there’s nothing more to this post but bitching.
I think you probably gathered from yesterday’s post that wearing masks at disney, outside in the heat, was no fun. Here’s the truth: I really really really hate masks in general. And I feel like i can’t even say that on social media or be viewed as some kind of crazy anti-masker. I don’t like wearing them and I don’t particularly like other people wearing them because, as someone who already has problems reading social cues, I have a hard time communicating/understanding people in masks. But I’m absolutely not against people wearing them if they want – it’s a “me” problem and not a “you” problem.
The biggest reason I don’t like wearing masks is because I do, genuinely, have issues breathing in them. And that’s something else I feel like I can’t even vent about on social media because I see soooo many people making fun of the people complaining about not being able to breath in masks. Like i’m just going to get lumped in the barrel of crazy if I even say it.
If you’re a longtime reader of my blog, you might remember that back in 2009 I had the whole anemia scare where they sent me to the ER because my hematocrit was so low my doctor said I was a “walking heart attack waiting to happen” and they thought I had leukemia. Turns out I was just so anemic my body stopped producing blood. Fun stuff. A few infusions of iron and some new blood later I was OK. Haven’t had another issue with it. But it did leave me with one long lasting issue, and that is scarring on my lungs.
I’ve never really talked to a doctor about it, outside of my doc at the time telling me “you have scarring on your lungs from this and it will never go away.” I’ve never brought it up, because 99% of the time, it has no effect on my life. There are only 2 times it comes up – exercise, and sometimes after eating. Exercising or exerting myself (especially in hot conditions) will make me short of breath, and if I keep pushing myself I will get tunnel vision and have to sit down an collect myself. If you ever see me at a con sitting on the ground in full cosplay, it’s probably because I’m catching my breath because of this issue.
And yeah sometimes after eating. Not all the time. But like sometimes after dinner I’ll feel a bit short of breath, and then go walk up the stairs, and by the time I’ve done that, I’ve got to sit down for a few minutes and collect myself. It’s not terrible, just kinda vaguely annoying.
And in the last 10 years that’s all it’s been – vaguely annoying. It’s never really been an issue I’ve felt like I need to bring up at the doctor again or anything. But then comes around 2020 and now I’ve got to wear a mask everywhere. Most of the time it’s fine. I’ve had a few instances where I’ve been in like, target, and needed to step outside and take my mask off for a few full deep breathes of air. But again – it’s just been vaguely annoying.
For Disney, I didn’t think it would really be anything more than that. I knew we could take our masks off to sit and eat or drink and I figured that would be plenty, and for the most part it was. It WAS absolutely fucking miserable to wear in the heat, but to get to be a disney, it’s fine.
But Sunday night, after dinner at Tutto, I had an episode of the “after eating shortness of breath”. Really didn’t think anything of it, I had time to sit for a good bit sipping my drink while Chase finished his dessert. But as soon a we headed off in the heat through World Showcase, I started to realize it was going to be a problem. Having the mask on was just exacerbating my shortness of breath. I basically had to find a place to sit every couple of minutes to try to catch my breath. Around France I started getting tunnel vision and had to just find a corner to sit and take my mask off for a minute before I got into “fainting” territory.
After that we got on the skyliner where I got to sit with the mask off and a nice breeze for several minutes and that helped get me over the hump.
So that’s my vent. It just sucks something as basic as wearing a mask is so politicized and I don’t even feel like I can say “hey I have a little trouble breathing in masks and don’t really like them but it’s cool if you do”.
And I’m gonna say if you’re going to disney in the future and the mask rule is still in effect, bring a fan. It helped have a breeze on your face – we saw people with those around-the-neck battery powered fans and were like damn we should’ve gotten something like that. Prob would’ve been a lifesaver.
And now for an unrelated rant. I was really disappointed in the clothing merch at disney this trip?? like everything was super generic. Want a Star Wars shirt? Well hope you just want a shirt that says “Star Wars” because the only shirts with characters or scenes or fun stuff on them were for kids. Want a disney shirt? Ok here’s 50 shirts that say “Walt Disney World” and a few with attraction names the end. Oh you wanted shirts with like princesses or stitch or jack sparrow on them? Hope you’re 10 years old. Like what is happening in merch over there?
the end.
